46% of screened students found to have vision challenges
During the fall of 2005 the eleven pilot schools screened 2,166 students and found that 46.02% had vision challenges. This does not mean that these students are necessariyly behind in their studies or failing school. But it does seem to indicate that these students are working harder than necessary to see and read.
The schools discussed the issue with the parents/guardians and are working with these students now. The pilot schools are excited by the progress children are making as they receive tutoring support and while reading scores are not in at this point and we cannot guarantee that they will improve, the indications are strong that a positive correlation will be found.
